The Social Purchasing Portal facilitates the targeting of existing everyday business purchasing to suppliers of goods and services to blend business and social values.

Vancouver's Fast Track to Employment (FTE) initiated the program in partnership with the BC Technology Social Venture Partners in June of 2004. The Vancouver portal now has over 100 purchasing partners and 50 suppliers participating in the venture. To date, the Vancouver has generated over $500,000 of targeted business activity and has created over 70 jobs for youth at risk and other individuals who require further support to enter the workforce.

The Toronto Social Purchasing Portal is a collaborative initiative of the Learning Enrichment Foundation, Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment Training and the Information Technology Association of Canada for Ontario (ITAC Ontario). The partnership of the private sector with other community-based organizations foster commercial growth and social benefit within the city's many communities.

Launched in April 2005, Winnipeg's Portal counts on the support of the University of Winnipeg and Assiniboine Credit Union. Among its suppliers, you will find Cosmopolitan Florists and Earthshare Agricultural Co-Op. General Manager, Mea Taylor comments: "There's no compromise of quality and using a SPP supplier or hiring through the SPP Employment Exchange sends a ripple of benefits down the line that feeds back into downtown Winnipeg."

Like all other Portals, it uses a demand driven business model to create social value for both the Calgary business community and low income Calgarians. The Calgary SPP is also promoting a Living Wage campaign: "No one who works full time should live in poverty."
